Tips for avoiding bath time toxins! 🛁

It can be overwhelming but also empowering to learn more about what ingredients both you and your baby should avoid. At a glance, here’s three commonly featured offenders that you need to be aware of.

INGREDIENTS TO AVOID
PARABENS
As mentioned, any ingredient that ends in paraben, such as ethylparaben, methylparaben, or butylparaben, should be avoided.

“ETH-“
Avoid products that have ingredients containing the letters eth – such as polyethylene glycols (also listed as PEG) or Phenoxyethanol as they contain 1,4-dioxane which is a known carcinogen.

SODIUM LAURYL (ETHER) SULFATE
Also labelled as SLS, SLES, sodium dodecyl sulfate or sodium PEG lauryl sulfate. This synthetic ingredient makes shampoo and other products nice and foamy but it can irritate the skin, eyes and lungs and also contains the harmful 1,4-dioxane. #rescueblue

Would you know how to identify Respiratory distress in your newborn or infant?

Newborns and young children are likely to display retractions on the chest when they are in respiratory distress. Retractions indicate that the body is straining to get enough oxygen. Newborns and very young children are particularly likely to display retractions in response to respiratory distress.

During a retraction, the chest caves in around the ribs and can often be seen by:
👶🏻 the intercostal retractions (spaces between the ribs)
👶🏻 substernal retractions (under the sternum) and subcostal retractions (under the rib cage)
👶🏻 supraclavicular retractions (the little triangle space just above the clavicle.

Children in respiratory distress may also often display with:
🚑 faster breathing
🚑 fairing nostrils
🚑 noisy grunting breathing

We always recommend that parents get familiar with what NORMAL breathing looks like in their newborns so that they are able to identify changes when they occur. A good way to do this is to take a recording of your babies breathing when they are fit and well so that you have a video to refer back to make comparisons with when your child becomes unwell. This way you will be able to easily identify any changes to their breathing patterns and notice any additional muscles being used.

By learning how to identify retractions you will be able to get help for your child in a more timely manner. If you notice any signs of respiratory distress in your child, then we want you to seek medical attention immediately or phone 000 and we will come assist you.

In addition to her knowledge, Kerri had amazing energy, was great at involving the little babies and working their many outbursts into funny commentary which really lightened the mood and made the social anxiety of having an unpredictable child in a group situation disappear.

WHEN SHOULD I INTRODUCE SOLID FOODS TO MY BABY?

"Anytime between the ages of 4-6 months is perfect, depending on when your baby seems like they're ready. Ideally, they would be able to sit supported in a highchair, and they may have shown some interest in the food that you’re eating.
.
If you’re not sure if they’re ready, it doesn’t hurt at all to just give it a go– choose a day where you’re not too busy or stressed out (if you’ve got older children, then that’s probably never!), sit them in a highchair, and try to feed them a very small amount of thin puree on the end of a soft teaspoon.
.
It’s very normal for them to push their tongue out so that the food comes out, just simply scoop up the food and try again. They should eventually get the hang and realise that their tongue needs to go the other way in order to swallow! If it’s not working, call it a day and try again in another couple of weeks or so."

Car safety tips part 2! 🚗 #rescueblue
.
SNACK WITH CARE
Be careful when giving your littles one’s snacks to eat in the car while driving. Children must be supervised when eating to avoid choking, so when it’s time to have something to eat, we recommend pulling over somewhere safe so that you can watch your child eat. We do not recommend letting your child eat while you drive as you may miss a complete obstruction.
.
BEWARE OF PROJECTILES
Beware of projectiles in the car, such as sippy cups or heavier toys. Although they may seem harmless, during a crash these objects can be thrown around a car and have been known to cause serious injury.
.
ALLOW PLENTY OF TIME FOR TRAVEL.
When travelling with a baby, you may find you need to stop more often or for longer than planned. Allow yourself lots of time to travel. You may also want to check real-time information on traffic jams road conditions and closures

It's holiday time again which means a lot of our families are on the road exploring new places. With all this extra time in the car it's important that we are ensuring safe travel with our Little ones. Here are our top tips to ensure car safety this holiday! 🚗 #rescueblue
.
PREPARE THE CAR
Before putting your kids in the car, turn the car on for a few minutes with the air conditioning running first to make sure the car cools down before sitting them in their car seats.
.
TRAVEL IN THE MORNING
Where possible, travel in the morning when the sun is less hot! Child car seats have been known to get very hot, so dress them in a fewer layers to avoid over heating.
.
AVOID DEHYDRATION
If your baby is still solely on breast and bottle feeds, then it is recommended that you offer extra feeds while travelling to minimise the risk of dehydration.
.
TAKE BREAKS
Babies are not meant to spend long periods of time in their car seat. During stops, allow your baby to kick, roll or crawl around on a rug on the ground where it is safe for them to do so.

Traveling with kids? 🛬 Read our tips👇

Losing your child while traveling is every parents worst nightmare. One of the best things you can do to help someone identify your child in the case they get separated from you is have your name and phone number written on their clothing or on their body somewhere.

Either writing it on their t-shirt, on their forearm using a non-toxic ink, or having a little bracelet made up with your contact details on it will assist in the event that you get separated. There are also a range of wearable tracking devices for children now available on the market!
